Objective

Shared decision-making (SDM) is an approach to clinical decision-making that includes patients' values and preferences during health-related decisions. Previous research suggests that SDM may be beneficial in the treatment of substance use disorders; however, the impact of SDM in the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) remains unclear.

Findings/Key points

Evidence suggests patients may prefer this approach and outcomes may either improve or not change compared to usual care.

Design/methods

We found 14 studies that investigated limited aspects of SDM, such as allowing patient regulation of medication dose or optional psychotherapy, for adults with opioid use disorder (OUD).
