Objective

We describe success of peer support specialists in recruiting SUD patients into treatment, with attention to racial disparities in linkage to care.

Findings/Key points

Peer support specialists may be an effective way to link patients with substance use disorders to treatment. Black patients with substance use disorders were not as likely to be successfully engaged in treatment by peer support specialists in the emergency department after controlling for age, sex, insurance status, and marital status

Design/methods

This is a retrospective, observational cohort study (n=785) performed at an urban, academic medical center.
