Findings/Key points

This guideline is for primary care providers, who are likely unfamiliar with substance use disorder, on how to address and treat the disorder. It focuses on offering information and suggestions relating to the harms, screening for, withdrawal and management of the use of the following substances: alcohol, opioids, tobacco, cannabis, and benzodiazepines. It also briefly discusses how to talk to a client about their substance use, diagnosis and to employ trauma informed care.
