Objective

This study examined the association between opioid analgesic prescription initiation and suicidal behavior among young people.

Findings/Key points

Adolescents, teens, and young adults initiating opioid therapy had a sharply elevated risk for suicidal behavior relative to noninitiators, but not relative to peers initiating prescription NSAIDs.
