Objective

Research to identify risk and protective factors for overdose is often conducted using administrative data or researcher-derived surveys and without explicit input from people with lived experience. We aimed to understand the scope of U.S. research on factors associated with opioid overdose among previously incarcerated people.

Findings/Key points

People who have been incarcerated are at an elevated risk for overdose post-incarceration. We identified 20 risk and protective factors associated with overdose among previously incarcerated people in the US from the published literature and 21 additional factors from experts with lived experience. Expert panels identified nearly twice as many structural factors for overdose than the published academic literature. Incorporating the voices of people with lived experience is valuable to our understanding of the risk and protective factors that influence overdose in the previously incarcerated population.

Design/methods

We first conducted a narrative review of the published literature. A search was performed using PubMed and APA PsycInfo. We then convened two expert panels consisting of people with lived experience and people who work with people who were previously incarcerated.
