As 2022 nears its close, we send our sincere thanks to each and every one of our members. We are proud to share that 1,112 people are now members of the NSS-CoP. This growing membership includes a dynamic and interdisciplinary group of people from right across the country – physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners, people who use(d) drugs, harm reduction workers, pharmacists, researchers, program coordinators, policy analysts, and activists! 

This community of practice would not exist without your hard work and dedication to your communities! We are honored to be a part of strengthening the capacity of prescribed safer supply programs as well as supporting non-medical and compassion club models. 

We offer our special thanks to our advisory council and working group members who remain so engaged in the work we are doing! Your guidance, input, and feedback are deeply appreciated and helps us in improving our work. We are particularly excited and proud of our four new resources published in 2022, including our Safer Supply and Reframing Diversion FAQs for Health Care Providers, our ever-evolving evidence brief Prescribed Safer Supply Programs: Emerging Evidence, and the Safer Supply, Opioid Agonist Treatment & Harm Reduction: National Advocacy Toolkit.  

This year between January and March 2022 alone, 1,883 people died from toxic drug poisoning in Canada. This amounts to approximately 21 deaths per day. Estimates tell us that these numbers are only increasing and that 2022 may be the deadliest year yet. This is terrifying and enraging, and also makes the work we do even more necessary, meaningful, and urgent.

Like most organizations and programs we work with, we share in your uncertainties when it comes to funding renewals and resources. We sincerely hope that 2023 will bring with it promising news about funding as well as other commitments from our governments to address the drug poisoning crisis, including the essential policy changes needed, such as decriminalization and the regulation of the drug supply.

This year, we lost two passionately engaged community of practice members – Randy Roberts and Alexandra de Kiewit. Both were active members of Action for Safer Supply, a NSS-CoP working group composed exclusively of people who use drugs. Alexandra and Randy are deeply beloved and sorely missed. Their work in harm reduction, drug policy, and drug user activism was and will continue to be essential in our struggle moving forward. We continue our shared and collective work in honour and memory of their work, passion, and commitment.
